Riding Thermals instead of Waves
The strong winds that characterise this region attract not only water sports enthusiasts but also aficionados of hang-gliding, para-gliding and para-sailing. While the powerful air currents are often too strong to practise these sports safely, they do attract experienced dare-devils from across the world. Lesser mortals, however, wait for gentler conditions.
The Tarifa winds might give you fewer chances to go up, but on the occasions that hang-gliders and para-gliders are riding the currents and thermals, the peace, serenity and amazing views make it an unforgettable experience.
The same applies to micro-lights and delta-kites. Even though they are mechanically powered, these tiny light-frame aircraft are hampered by winds that are too strong. Given the prevailing conditions, you will have to ask permission from the local flying club before flying. The good thing is that they will advise you on weather conditions and also have access to the best launch sites.
Enthusiasts can often be found inland, where atmospheric conditions are not quite as extreme as offshore, but when the opportunity presents itself, it is an occasion that no-one wants to miss. After all, who wouldn't want to watch the sun setting into the sea from up there?
